Two Klausturgate MPs Found To Have Broken Ethics Rules

Published August 1, 2019

Two of the six MPs recorded speaking abusively about their colleagues last November have been found to have broken parliamentary ethics rules, Morgunblaðið reports.

The two MPs in question, both from the Centre Party, are Bergþór Ólason and Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson. Both of these MPs had taken leaves of absence when the story first broke, and were also the first to return afterwards.

Bergþór was recorded calling People’s Party chair Inga Sæland “a raving mad cunt” who is “fucking crazy”, and commented on his assessment of the attractiveness of other female politicians, amongst other things. Gunnar Bragi called Independence Party MP Unnur Brá Konráðsdóttir a “bureaucratic hag” and Social Democrat MP Oddný Harðardóttir a “spaz”, while later bragging about quid pro quo dealings with the Independence Party.

The ethics committee assembled to examine the possible ethics violations of the things these MPs said came to the conclusion that “there is no need to examine every single thing these two said. They all stem from the same root: they are unacceptable and reflect a lack of respect regarding the women discussed.”

It has not yet been disclosed what, if any, consequences these two MPs may face.
